CSR Introducing: Trudy Jukes

CSR Introducing: Trudy Jukes

From managing international forensic science collaborations to championing learner welfare, Trudy Jukes has built a career dedicated to people, progress and purpose. As CSR Scientific Training’s Director of Customer Relations and Designated Safeguarding Lead, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the experience of every learner and employer the organisation supports.

Trudy has been part of CSR since its earliest days, helping it grow from a start-up training provider into one of the UK’s leading names in science and healthcare apprenticeships, now proudly recognised as an Ofsted Outstanding apprenticeship provider. Her journey reflects CSR’s values of care, excellence and lifelong learning.

What’s your role at CSR Scientific Training?
I am CSR’s Director of Customer Relations and also serve as the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

What does your day-to-day work involve?
No two days are the same. My work spans strategic planning, supporting the needs of our customers and leading our safeguarding team. As DSL, I design and deliver training, as well as producing resources to ensure learner welfare remains at the heart of what we do. At certain times of year, I also chair our Graduation Committee, coordinating the annual ceremony that celebrates our learners’ achievements.

What brought you into this line of work?
I have always worked in customer-focused roles. Before CSR, I spent ten years at the Forensic Science Service, supporting international police forces and organisations such as the Criminal Cases Review Commission. When the FSS closed, CSR was just starting, and I joined as Apprenticeship Manager. It was a steep but rewarding learning curve into the world of education and 15 years later, I am still here, immersed in everything apprenticeships.

Why did you choose to work in apprenticeships?
In a way, apprenticeships chose me. But once I was involved, I quickly saw how powerful they are. Watching a young person begin their apprenticeship and grow into a valued, confident professional, often going on to manage parts of their organisation — is one of the most rewarding journeys to witness.

What’s one achievement you’re most proud of in your career so far?
For confidentiality reasons I can’t talk about individual safeguarding cases, but the moments that mean the most are when I’ve supported a learner at risk and later see them thriving, growing into a confident individual, leading others, and building a successful future. That kind of transformation is the most rewarding achievement of all.

Favourite book, podcast, or TV show that inspires or relaxes you?
I am fascinated by history, so I love documentaries ranging from pre-history through to the modern era, Dinosaurs, Romans, WW2, I will watch them all. For escapism, I’m drawn to sci-fi like Stranger Things and spy fiction such as Slow Horses.

If you weren’t working in science/apprenticeships, what would you be doing?
My degree is in the History of Art, so I would probably be working in a museum.

What does the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating mean to you personally?
Having been with CSR since its very beginning, this recognition means a huge amount. It reflects the hard work, dedication and passion of the whole team, it confirms everything we have been striving toward over the years.

How do you see CSR shaping the future of science and skills training?
CSR is constantly evolving. I see us expanding the scope of our apprenticeships, offering even more support and opportunities for learners and employers, and continuing to innovate in the way we deliver training.

What message would you give to someone thinking about starting an apprenticeship with us?
If you are interested in a career in science or healthcare science, an apprenticeship is a brilliant choice. You will earn while you learn, avoid student debt and gain qualifications that employers value all with an Outstanding training provider! It’s an opportunity not to be missed.

Favourite quote or piece of advice you live by?
“Difficulties mastered are opportunities won.” – Winston Churchill

One thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I swam 200 miles last year. Not all in one go obviously. I am aiming for more this year!
