What does an apprenticeship in the STEM sector look like?

A STEM-focused apprenticeship is a structured training programme that allows someone to begin or progress a career in STEM by combining workplace experience with formal study. Instead of learning science or healthcare science solely in a classroom or lecture theatre, apprentices work in a real scientific environment—such as a laboratory, hospital, research facility, or industrial setting—while also studying towards a recognised qualification.

Key features include:

  • Earn while you learn – apprentices are paid employees, gaining income as they train.
  • Practical skills – the majority of learning happens in the workplace, applying scientific knowledge to real-world tasks such as experiments, analysis, testing, or regulatory processes.
  • Structured training – apprenticeships follow national standards, with clear knowledge, skills and behaviours that must be demonstrated.
  • Recognised qualifications – successful completion leads to industry-recognised qualifications, often equivalent to A levels, foundation degrees or higher-level degrees, depending on the apprenticeship level.
  • Career progression – apprenticeships can start at entry level (laboratory technician or healthcare science assistant for example) and progress to more advanced roles (such as Technician scientist, Quality Practitioner, or Sales Executive).

In short, STEM based apprenticeships offer a direct route into the increasingly broad sector sectors, giving individuals the chance to develop expertise and employers the benefit of a skilled, work-ready workforce.

What matters most is your enthusiasm for learning as almost anyone who is interested in building a career in science or healthcare science can apply. If you are unsure use the ‘Get in Touch’ form at the bottom of this page for more information.

Most apprenticeship vacancies will state the minimum grade expectations (usually set by the employer). Most commonly they require at least GCSEs in science, English and maths. However, it’s more about your willingness to learn and grow in the field than just meeting certain grades.

Typically, our apprenticeships last between 1 to 3 years, depending on the programme and your individual progress. We aim to support you every step of the way.

Support is what we do, from the moment you are orientated and enrolled onto your chosen apprenticeship and all along your journey we are here to help support and guide you.
