At CSR Scientific Training, our people are at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team plays a vital role in delivering the outstanding science and healthcare science apprenticeships that help shape the next generation of talent.
Today marks the start of a brand-new weekly series where we’ll be shining a spotlight on the people behind CSR, sharing their stories, their passions, and the important part they play in supporting our learners and partners.
To kick things off, we’re delighted to introduce Robert Green, Business Development Director…
What’s your role at CSR Scientific Training?
I am the Director of Business Development. My role is to build and sustain strong partnerships with employers, universities, and stakeholders so that we can expand the opportunities available to apprentices and ensure our programmes meet real industry needs.
What does your day-to-day work involve?
No two days are the same. I spend time speaking with employers to understand their workforce challenges, working with our internal teams to design solutions, and exploring new initiatives that help us grow strategically in the life sciences and healthcare sectors.
What brought you into this line of work?
My career has always been about connecting people with opportunities. I was drawn to apprenticeships because they create a genuine link between education and employment, and I wanted to be part of that bridge.
Why did you choose to work in apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships deliver practical impact: they provide employers with the talent they need and give individuals the skills and confidence to progress. It is rewarding to be part of something that benefits both sides equally.
What’s one achievement you’re most proud of in your career so far?
I am proud of expanding CSR’s reach by securing partnerships with some of the UK’s leading scientific employers. These relationships have opened the door for hundreds of apprentices to begin their careers in science.
Favourite book, podcast, or TV show that inspires or relaxes you?
My favourite book/ story is Great Expectations, and I love The Diary of a CEO podcast. To relax, I enjoy watching sport and playing chess.
If you weren’t working in science/apprenticeships, what would you be doing?
I would probably be in a role focused on strategic partnerships in another sector—something that allows me to connect people and organisations to achieve more together.
What does the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating mean to you personally?
It is external recognition that our approach works, and it gives me real pride when I speak to employers. It shows them that CSR delivers at the very highest level.
How do you see CSR shaping the future of science and skills training?
We will continue to influence the national conversation about science apprenticeships. By building strong employer networks and anticipating future skills needs, we aim to play a central role in growing the UK’s scientific workforce.
What message would you give to someone thinking about starting an apprenticeship with us?
You will not just gain a qualification—you will gain an entry point into a career. CSR has the networks and the expertise to support you all the way. But be prepared… an apprenticeship is demanding and requires good time management skills.
Favourite quote or piece of advice you live by?
“The most incomprehensible thing about the Universe is that it is comprehensible” Einstein’s famous quote reminds me that there’s a hidden intelligibility or a logical solution to things that initially, seem beyond us.
One thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I am a keen runner and often use runs (If I’m honest – it’s more of a shuffle) to think through challenges and generate new ideas.
