Leah’s Apprenticeship Journey: Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant

When Leah started her Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship, she wanted to gain a deeper understanding of her work and how it contributes to patient care.

As she progressed, Leah discovered new areas of healthcare science that sparked her interest. She particularly enjoyed learning about microbiology, as well as exploring quality control, quality management, and quality assurance. “I had a lot of fun learning about different sections and understanding their work,” she said.

A key part of Leah’s journey was the support she received from her tutor, Ros. “Ros was a great tutor and catered to my needs with my dyslexia. She would often help me format my work to a better understanding and took time to do one-to-ones with me for my outstanding work.”

Leah explained that these sessions, along with clear guidance on structuring her assignments, made a big difference to her confidence and success. Leah also credits her senior, Ibrar. “Ibrar helped me a lot through the CSR course. He helped me manage my assignments and took time to help me understand the work I produce and why we do it. I do not think I would have achieved this much without Ibrar and Ros supporting me through this course.”

Looking to the future, Leah sees the apprenticeship as a stepping stone. “If I wanted to, I could progress higher to a Level 3 diploma for future job roles,” she said.
When asked if she would recommend the programme, Leah was enthusiastic. “I would recommend this as it was a great opportunity for me to understand microbiology a lot more.
This will also give other people a better understanding of the work we do and why we do it. It would also be a great opportunity for any future job roles.”
