Ana’s Apprenticeship Journey: Level 4 Healthcare Science
Ana recently completed the Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate apprenticeship with an excellent Merit grade at Frimley Park Hospital, specialising in cardiac care. Her apprenticeship provided her with direct hands-on experience in diagnostics including ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, cardiac monitors, and stress tests.
Reflecting on her time as an apprentice, Ana said:
“The apprenticeship has improved my clinical knowledge and hands-on experience in heart diagnostics, allowing me greater autonomy and responsibility. I feel prepared for advanced patient diagnoses and care, which has given me the confidence to progress further.”
Ana’s progression is already underway. She has discussed permanent roles with her line manager and has secured a position as a Healthcare Science Associate in the cardiac department. Building on this foundation, she has now enrolled onto the Echocardiography Training Programme (ETP), administered by the National School of Healthcare Science.
“By finishing my apprenticeship and acquiring this experience, I am feeling more confident to pursue a position in the echo field. The ETP blends academic study with hands-on clinical training, and once complete, I will be able to perform and interpret transthoracic echocardiograms across a range of heart diseases and patient groups.”
Ana explains that the apprenticeship provided her with valuable opportunities not only in echocardiography but also in areas such as pacemaker clinics and cardiac rehabilitation. It gave her a flexible and rewarding professional path without the need for traditional undergraduate routes.
Like many learners, Ana faced challenges along the way including managing stress, adapting to new placements, and balancing study with work. She approached these with resilience, professionalism, and curiosity, often shadowing colleagues in her own time to enhance her learning.
“I always maintained a professional and calm demeanour, listened actively, and showed empathy when dealing with difficult situations. I made time for study by planning a timetable and linking daily duties to academic learning.”
She is grateful for the support she received throughout her apprenticeship.
“Sonya was very supportive and helped me with my End-Point Assessment preparation. The established educational environment and guidance assisted me in connecting theory to practice. This apprenticeship has provided me with an excellent foundation in cardiac science and encouraged me to pursue a career in this area.”
