After completing the Level 3 Education Technician apprenticeship with an impressive distinction grade, Idman has now enrolled onto the Level 6 Bioscience and Digital Technologies programme at Northeastern University London. Reflecting on her apprenticeship, Idman said: “My apprenticeship introduced me to the role of a technician, a career path I knew little about before. It has provided me with a strong foundation in scientific work and equipped me with the skills to advance my career in research.”
The support she received from her tutor, Bozena, was an important part of her journey. “I never had to worry about my emails going unanswered, and all my queries and questions were always addressed” Idman explained.
She also valued the way learning was delivered. The remote sessions kept her engaged, with breakout rooms, cameras on and interactive lessons helping her stay involved.
For Idman, the apprenticeship route proved the right choice. “Having experienced different education paths, such as online courses and university, I found that the apprenticeship route worked best for me. If someone prefers learning on the job while gaining practical experience, it’s a great option. Coming from a working-class background and not wanting to take out a loan for university, my apprenticeship allowed me to learn and earn at the same
time, which was a huge advantage.”
During the programme, Idman took on opportunities she never expected, including giving presentations, participating in outreach, and shadowing different departments at her workplace. These experiences built her confidence and helped her discover new passions.
Looking back, Idman says she has truly enjoyed her time as an apprentice. The blend of practical workplace experience, supportive teaching, and opportunities for personal growth has given her a strong foundation for her next steps in research and beyond.
