Richard’s Apprenticeship Journey: Level 5 Technician Scientist
After working in a professional laboratory for 17 years, Richard knew he had valuable industry experience but often felt his lack of formal academic qualifications set him apart from colleagues. Returning to education was daunting, but the Level 5 Technician Scientist apprenticeship gave him the chance to gain recognition for his skills while building new ones.
“Being a neurodiverse thinker, traditional learning methods have not worked for me in the past. The academic route has not suited my way of thinking or learning. Doing an apprenticeship has given me an opportunity to build towards an equivalent of my colleagues, in a way that has suited my way of learning.”
Throughout the programme, Richard discovered strengths he didn’t fully realise he had. “This apprenticeship has greatly increased my confidence in my role. I am now more confident in report writing, design of scientific investigations and statistics. This has shown me that I have more skills than I initially thought and has also taught me new skills to enhance my work.”
Support from his tutor, Kim, was a key part of his success. “Kim has been an amazing support throughout this whole process. She has taken the time to support me when I didn’t initially understand concepts, to explain in alternative ways to suit my learning style. The numerous professional discussions and presentations have built my confidence in EPA.”
Richard found that the varied pace and learning styles challenged him but also helped him grow. “The range of learning styles and presentation styles has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me, helping build my confidence.”
All of Richard’s commitment paid off when he successfully completed the programme with a distinction grade. “This experience has challenged me, but I have felt supported throughout the whole process. Coming back into education after such a long time was daunting, but I am glad I have done it.”
