the apprentice journey and you

Recruitment and Onboarding

The first step of any successful apprenticeship is recruiting the right candidate(s) for your organisation.

Our dedicated team will work closely with you to:

  • Asses your job description and ensure it meets the criteria for the apprenticeship standard
  • Advertise your vacancy on the Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) gov.uk and share it across our social media channels
  • Shortlist eligible candidates

As a line manager, you play a key role in welcoming your apprentice into the team. From helping with interviews to shaping their induction, you set the tone for their workplace experience. Clear expectations and a supportive start build confidence and ensure your apprentice feels valued from day one.

Regular Review

Your ongoing reviews provide structure and encouragement, helping the apprentice track progress and stay motivated. By giving timely feedback and recognising achievements, you’ll identify strengths, address gaps early, and make sure training is aligned with the needs of your team.

End-Point Assessment (EPA)

As the apprentice approaches EPA, your role is to provide reassurance and opportunities to practise. By guiding them through workplace tasks, encouraging revision, and helping them apply knowledge in context, you ensure they are confident and fully prepared to demonstrate competence.

Continuing CPD

Your support doesn’t end at completion. By encouraging apprentices to keep learning and take on new responsibilities, you help them grow into skilled, adaptable professionals who add long-term value to your organisation — and strengthen your team’s capability.

Common Questions from line managers and mentors

Line manager and Mentor FAQs

You are responsible for supporting the apprentice day-to-day, giving them opportunities to apply what they learn, and providing constructive feedback. You also work with CSR tutors to track progress and ensure the apprentice is developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours required.

Most line managers spend around 1–2 hours per month on structured reviews and feedback, in addition to informal day-to-day guidance. Mentors may meet with the apprentice more regularly, depending on the organisation’s set-up.

No. CSR tutors and assessors carry out formal assessments. Your role is to observe, give feedback, and confirm that the apprentice is demonstrating skills in the workplace.

Regular workplace reviews are encouraged, usually every 6–8 weeks, alongside the apprentice’s formal reviews with CSR. These check-ins help keep learning on track and allow issues to be resolved early.

If an apprentice is finding aspects of their training difficult, raise it with the CSR tutor straight away. Together, we can agree additional support or adjustments to help them succeed.

Apprentices must spend at least 20% of their paid time on learning activities away from their normal duties (e.g. online modules, workshops, project work). As a line manager, you help plan and record this time, so it fits with business needs.

EPA is the final assessment where the apprentice demonstrates competence. Your role is to provide opportunities for practice, reassure them, and ensure they can showcase their skills confidently.

Many apprentices continue into permanent roles or progress to higher-level apprenticeships. As a manager, you can help by discussing progression opportunities and encouraging ongoing CPD.

CSR provides dedicated tutors and assessors for line managers and mentors. You can reach out at any stage for advice, resources, or to discuss your apprentice’s progress.
